It possibly represents Jörmungandr - a sea serpent, the middle child of the
giantess Angrboða and Loki. The serpent grew so large that he was able to
surround the earth and grasp his own tail. As a result, he received the name of
the Midgard Serpent or World Serpent.
When he lets go his own tail, the world will end
The Urnes style is the last of the Viking Age art styles flourishing in second
half of the 11th century. The style is named after the wooden sculptures still
present in the church of Urnes, Norway. It is characterized by animal motifs
with entwined looping lines.
